Fairley Ridiculous

Real quick, I don't have much time before I need to head up North, but I want to tell you guys my thoughts on the pick of Nick Fairley...

I don't like it. I know where it makes sense, having two guys up front in Fairley and Suh for years to come is a great plan, but there are other positions needed to make a great defense, one of those being corner. Prince Amukamara was the guy I wanted and the guy I felt the Lions needed to pick. They have one of the worse corners and secondary in the NFL, and it needed improvement.

Fairley was the best talent available, however Prince was right there with him and he filled a need. I don't agree with picking a guy that's a stretch (like Jimmy Smith if he were the best corner left) just to fill a need, but Prince is no slouch, rated 10th on Mel's big board I believe.

What concerns me is that Fairley slid for a reason. He was top five talent that went 13th overal and I don't know why. I also don't like the fact that he played under Gene Chizick, was a JUCO transfer, and really was a one year guy like Cam Newton (13 games played his first year, 2 starts.)

Prince has the potential to be a damn good corner, and I still feel that he was the better pick.

Look for the Lions to address linebacker or cornerback in round two, my money being on Brandon Harris, the corner from Miami. But if Akeem Ayers (LB UCLA) or Aaron Williams (CB Texas) if they're still there when the Lions pick.

1 comment:

  1. 1-can't argue that he was the best player on the board (although i would argue hard 4 bowers)
2-it does seem like we're just boosting 1 position, like millen with wr's, but imo dl is the 2nd most important position other than ol
3-i am still very concerned that we didn't take an ol or cb, but i think we'll still have a solid season
4-i think it would be great if (except for an ot in the future), schwartz drafts to stack our defense, like the ravens
5-schwartz was the only one who was able to keep haynesworth in shape, hopefully he'll keep fairley in line also
